(Wilmington, NC) The Charlotte Eagles, in
their first road game of the 2006 season had a three 3-1
victory in their sights led by Ross Spencer's, but Anthony
Maher scored two late Wilmington goals to finish with a 3-3
tie.
The Wilmington Hammerheads came out ready
to play, controlling the tempo in the first 20 minutes of
play. Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute on
a goal by Kenny Bundy. George Cory set up the goal,
intercepting a pass and playing the ball through the
Charlotte defense for Bundy who finished for the goal.
Charlotte settled in and had the better
of the play in the latter part of the first half. The
Eagles tied up the match in the 34th minute. Greg
Schroeder served the ball into the box from the left side
and found Ross Spencer. Spencer scored with a nicely
placed header from about 12 yards out.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Charlotte Eagles took their first
lead of the match in the 54th minute of play. Aaron
Faro took a throw in deep in Wilmington's half. Faro
threw it to Dustin Swinehart who flicked the ball with a
header back to Ross Spencer. Spencer fired the ball
into the net for his second goal of the match.
Charlotte extended its lead to two in the
74th minute. Forward Taurai Daka beat his defender and
maneuvered his way to the end line on the left side.
Daka then cut the ball back for Dustin Swinehart.
Swinehart drilled a shot to the far post, deflecting off the
post and into the net for the 3-1 lead.
Anthony Maher saved the day for
Wilmington scoring two quick goals late in the second half.

Khumalo played a ball through the Charlotte defense onto the
run of Maher. Maher, on the breakaway, chipped the
ball over advancing goalkeeper Chris McClellan for the goal.
