(Ludlow, MA) - The Charlotte Eagles faced
2005 Championship match opponent the Western Mass Pioneers
tonight for the second match between the two teams this
season. Clay Roberts put two in the back of the net to
lead the Eagles in their 2-1 victory. With the win
Charlotte improves to 2-1-3 for 9 points, and Western Mass
falls to 2-3-1 for 7 points.
Charlotte dominated possession during the
first half of play and the first goal of the match came for
the Eagles in the 11th minute. Clay Roberts passed to
Taurai Daka who played a nice through ball back to Roberts,
splitting the defense. Roberts fired a shot on goal to
take the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles took a two goal lead six
minutes later with another goal by Clay Roberts. This
time is was the long throw of Ben Johnson that set up the
goal. Johnson's throw found Jacob Coggins who flicked
it back with his head to Roberts. Roberts headed the
ball into the top corner of the net.
The first half ended with the Eagles on
top 2-0. Charlotte continued to play well in the
second half, but didn't add to their two goal lead.
Instead it was Western Mass getting the lone goal of the
half. In the 78th minute, Tony Fernandes took a long
throw in deep in the Charlotte end. Kyle Texeira got a
head on the ball and directed it on goal to beat Chris
McClellan in the top corner, cutting the Charlotte lead to
one. The Pioneers amped up the pressure in the last
ten minutes of play, but the Charlotte defense held firm to
preserve the 2-1 victory.
The Eagles are back on the road tomorrow
night facing New Hampshire
Phantoms in New Hampshire. The Eagles
return to home field action at Waddell Stadium on Saturday,
June 3rd, hosting New Hampshire at 8:00 pm in another doubleheader evening
