Charlotte
Eagles Hold on for 1-0 Win
Swinehart
Scores 100th Career Goal
(Charlotte, NC) - The
Charlotte Eagles pro soccer team (5-3-4, 19 pts) hosted
the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-2-5, 11 pts) tonight at
Waddell Stadium. Dustin Swinehart scored the lone goal
of the match and the Eagles held on for the 1-0 victory.
The Charlotte Eagles took an
early first half lead. Three minutes into the match
Dustin Swinehart scored the first goal of the game and his
100th career goal. Chris Lemons set up the goal with a
head ball into the six yard box at the near post. Swinehart was there to flick the ball into the top
right corner with a header.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds had
their share of offense in the first half registering 8
shots, but the Charlotte defense kept the Pittsburgh offense
from creating any real dangerous opportunities. Chris
McClellan had five saves in the half. The first half
ended with the Eagles up 1-0.
Charlotte and Pittsburgh
continued with a fairly even second half, but the Eagles
were out-shot 5 - 3. Charlotte defended well tonight. The Charlotte Eagles finished
with a 1-0 win.
Eagles Head Coach Mark
Steffens commented on the match:
"We didn't ever get into a
rhythm tonight, but had bits of brilliance with some good
combinations. The guys were really tired coming into
tonight after coaching camps in the heat all week and road
games this past Saturday and Wednesday. Our goal
tonight was to defend well and keep Pittsburgh from scoring,
and we just did that. Casey Barton did a great job in
the back for us. We defended well as a team and that
won us the game."
The Charlotte Eagles are on the road this Wednesday, June
28th for a second round US Open Cup match against the
Wilmington Hammerheads. Then on July 1st the Eagles
continue on the road for regular season action against the
Long Island Rough Riders. Charlotte returns to home
field regular season action on Saturday, July 15th hosting
the Richmond Kickers in another doubleheader evening with
the Charlotte Lady Eagles.
