Charlotte Falls to First Place Richmond 0-2

(Richmond, VA) - The Charlotte Eagles faced the league-leading Richmond Kickers on the road tonight.  Robert Ssejjemba scored the game winning goal for the Kickers who finished with a 2-0 victory.  With tonight's loss the Eagles drop to 4-2-3 for 15 points and Richmond holds onto the league league with a 6-1-2 record for 20 points.

The Richmond Kickers put it all together in the first half of play maintaining the majority of the possession and controlling the pace of the match.  Richmond took the 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a set piece after a Charlotte foul.  Sascha Gorres took the free kick from about 20 yards out, serving a ball to the near post.  Robert Ssejjemba got free from the defense and directed the ball into the net with a header from 2 yards out.  Ssejjemba scored the only goal of the first half, but Richmond out-shot Charlotte 7-3 in the half.

Charlotte turned the game around at the start of the second half, looking like a new team on the field.  Through the second half Charlotte controlled the tempo of play and out-possessed Richmond.  The Eagles best scoring opportunities came from veteran forward Dustin Swinehart, but the Eagles were unable to finish any of their chances.  Instead, it was the Kickers who scored the lone goal in the second half, despite being out-shot 10-4. Michael Burke scored the goal for Richmond in the 82nd minute on the counterattack of Charlotte's offensive pressure.  Chris Carrieri played the ball forward onto the run of Burke, who maneuvered past a Charlotte defender and hit a low hard shot to the far post.  Eagles goalkeeper Chris McClellan got a piece of the shot, but it wasn't enough to prevent the goal.

The Charlotte Eagles continue on the road next weekend facing the Cincinnati Kings on Saturday June 17th.  June 24th is the Eagles next home game at Waddell Stadium, where the Eagles will host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 8:00 pm.  The Charlotte Lady Eagles are home next Saturday hosting the Richmond Kickers Destiny at 7:30 pm.
