CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Lady Eagles of the United Soccer Leagues W-League recently announced the return of two key starters who will anchor the defense for the upcoming season.
Leading the way for Charlotte is University of Florida graduate Shelley Lyle, returning for her third season with the Lady Eagles. Lyle brings international experience to the team, having participated in a number of U.S. U-23 training camps and international matches. Lyle’s role will be to hold down the middle of the defense as she helps the Lady Eagles fight for their 10th post-season berth.

Samford University’s Alyssa Whitehead returns to her spot anchoring the Charlotte defense in goal. Whitehead is coming off a remarkable collegiate season, leading the nation in goals-against average (0.31) and ranking third in save percentage (0.91). Whitehead allowed only six goals on a total of 169 shots faced with Samford, and she’s expected to continue her stellar play into the season with the Lady Eagles.
“We are extremely happy and fortunate to have Shelley Lyle and Alyssa Whitehead coming back to anchor and lead or defense this year,” Charlotte Head Coach Lee Horton said. “Alyssa had an outstanding sophomore season for Samford where she was recognized nationally by being selected for the NSCAA All Southeast Regional Team. She has a tremendous wing span to cover the goal and is growing every day in her experience and decision making."
“Shelley Lyle is a very experienced and knowledgeable defender who has played at a high level. This will be her third season with the Lady Eagles. Her leadership on and off the field will be vital to our success.”
With two strong assets leading the defense, the Lady Eagles are encouraged and confident as they look forward to the start of the 2010 season.
