Charlotte, NC – The Eagles return home after a long road stand and will face the Wilmington Hammerheads for the second time in the 2014 USL PRO season. The Eagles last met the Hammerheads when they traveled to Wilmington and took a 2-0 victory.
The Eagles first goal, in the 2-0 vicory, began with a long ball from Ben Newnam to David Geno. The rookie forward collected the ball well and found Wells Thompson who took a touch and curled a left-footed strike past Quillan Roberts to give the visitors the first half lead. Drew Yates added the insurance goal late in stoppage time as Jorge Herrera drew the Wilmington defense out towards the corner flag before finding Yates alone at the penalty spot where the former Maryland Terrapin hammered it home.
In the Eagles last game they traveled to Raleigh to take on the Carolina Railhawks in a US Open Cup match. The Railhawks emerged victorious thanks to two first half goals. They will now host Chivas USA of Major League Soccer on June 14th.
Charlotte's last league game was on the road against the Richmond Kickers. Two set-piece goals from Kickers' leading scorer George Davis IV were the difference as the home side pitched a shutout against the Eagles.
Drew Yates still leads USL PRO in assits with five, while Jorge Herrera currently sits in 4th place in the point standings with 10 through nine games.
The Eagles currently sit at 9th place in the USL PRO standings with nine points in nine games while the Hammerheads sit at 5th with 14 points in seven games.
The Hammerheads last game resulted in a 5-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds with goals coming from Jordan Hamilton, Steve Miller, Samuel Ochoa, Cody Arnoux, and William Heaney. Steve Miller is the Hammerheads leading scorer and currently ranks at 15th in the league in points leaders with six points in seven games played with his teammate Samuel Ochoa sitting at 19th place with five points in five games.
