Lady Eagles Move In To First Place with Victory in Atlanta
Atlanta, Georgia - The Charlotte Lady Eagles took sole possession of the Southeastern Conference with a 2-0 defeat of the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday night.
The Lady Eagles (4-1-2, 14 pts) now sit ahead of the Gulf Coast Texans (3-1-2, 11 pts) and the Carolina Elite Cobras (3-1-2, 11 pts.) and will host both teams at home, Carolina twice and Gulf Coast once, in the final three games of the 2014 USL W-League regular season.
Charlotte opened the scoring in the 29th minute as Jade Montgomery took a pass from Summer Lanter and sent it off the crossbar and down over the goal line for the first goal of the match.
Leah Fortune added an insurance goal for the visitors in the 65th minute. Her one-touch volley off a long pass from Jade Montgomery helped secure the three points for Charlotte in their second game of a back-to-back, having played Gulf Coast to a 2-2 draw the night before.
The Lady Eagles defense stood tall in stoppage time as Atlanta mounted pressure with two corners but Robyn Jones and her Lady Eagles defenders did well to preserve the shut out.
Leah Fortune's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season. She now has four goals and three assists for 11 points in six games. Robyn Jones recorded her third shutout of the season and now sits with a 4-1-1 record with a .923 GAA.
The Lady Eagles return home next weekend when the Carolina Elite Cobras visit Queens Sports Complex on Saturday, June 28th. Make sure to follow all of the action on Twitter using the hashtag #LE00.
