Herrera Scores Two in Eagles 2-1 Win Over Richmond
(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles hosted the Richmond Kickers tonight in the third pairing of the teams this season. Jorge Herrera scored two goals for Charlotte to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 victory.
The Charlotte Eagles took the lead early in the match when Worteh Sampson was tripped up just inside the Kicker's 18 yard box. A penalty kick was awarded for Charlotte. Jorge Herrera stepped up to take the penalty kick and beat Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale with a placed shot into the bottom right corner.
Charlotte seemed to have the better of the play through most of the first half and outshot Richmond 9-4 in the half. Richmond seemed flat at times, but had a few opportunities on the counterattack.
Jorge Herrera scored his second goal of the match to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the 56th minute of play. The goal developed with Alex Woods overlapping on the left side. Woods moved the ball to the middle for Ssejjemba who touched the ball on to the right side for Herrera. Herrera blasted a low shot to the far post, beating Ronnie Pascale in goal.
The Richmond Kickers cut the Charlotte lead back to one in the 82nd minute. Richmond directed a shot on goal that was saved by Charlotte native Kevin Trapp, but Richmond substitute Fred Smith got the rebound to put Richmond on the scoreboard.
Richmond put heavy pressure on the Charlotte goal in the final minutes of the match in search of an equalizer, but the Eagles defense held strong to preserve the 2-1 victory.
The Eagles return to home field action on Friday night for a doubleheader evening with the Lady Eagles at restart field. The evening begins with the Lady Eagles hosting the Tampa Bay Helenic at 5:30pm followed by the Eagles Pro Team hosting the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at 8:00pm.
