(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Tampa Bay Hellenic tonight at Restart Field.
Tampa Bay opened the match in dominating form nearly scoring in the early moments and capitalizing on a quick possession through the midfield when Stacy Bishop was able to find a goal side Alicia Tirelli who out ran the Lady Eagles defense and slid a shot underneath Laura Armstrong. The Lady Eagles were able to get their feet under them and possess the ball in the blazing heat. In the 17th minute a Christy Rife ball found the feet of Nikki Lyons who cruised past a Tampa Bay defender and slid a ball across the six finding a wide open Kelly Schmedes who calmly finished to draw Charlotte even. The half continued with Tampa Bay having another good scoring chance about 32 minutes in with a nice combination resulting in a break away. Tamires Gomez did not give up on the play and was able to run the play down and keep the Tampa Bay forward from a clean strike and Laura Armstrong collected. Gomez would put her print on the game again in the 39th minute with a brilliantly weighted first time diagonal ball that dropped just over the Tampa Bay defender onto Tina Murphy's chest. Murphy neatly collected and secured the goal with a solid finish. The Lady Eagles were not done though. Lulu Quigly was able to slide a through ball to Kelly Schmedes who carried the ball fighting off a defender in route to a lifted ball bast Tampa goalkeeper Katy Fraine giving Charlotte a 3-1 comeback lead at halftime. The second half opened with the two sides sharing possession and no real dangerous opportunities. Nikki Lyons opened up the lead for the Lady Eagles as she opportunistically gathered a ball and beat a Tampa Bay defender and feed an open Christy Rife who was met by Fraine but was able to tackle the ball through her and roll the ball into the vacated net. Tampa Bay would pull one back after a corner kick was deflected off of the line but Tampa Bay won the second ball which was fed in from Rhonda Jones to a free Alicia Tirelli who flicked it behind her leg past Laura Armstrong to make the score line 4-2. Tampa Bay nearly drew even after Jordan Danielle cleared a ball that had been chipped over Armstrong and the rang the post moments later. Despite the late efforts the Lady Eagles were able to solidify the win to take them to 6-1 and still in second place behind Atlanta in the Atlantic division. The Lady Eagles will play tomorrow night at 7pm at Restart Field, not at UNC Charlotte as the ticket says. The Lady Eagles return to home field action on tomorrow night hosting the Bradenton Athletics at Restart field. Doubleheader night means two games for the price of one.
