EAGLES' READING PROGRAM RECEIVES HONORS

April 24th, 2007:  On Tuesday, April 23rd the Charlotte Eagles were honored for the CMS "Goals on Wings" reading incentive program. The Eagles were awarded the " C.C. Cameron Business Involvement in Education Award" at a reception yesterday by the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce at Johnson & Wales University.

The pilot program was launched back in March through a partnership between the Charlotte Eagles and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The program involved students from three schools; Grier Academy, Allenbrook Elementary, and Sterling Elementary. In just one month, the program saw immediate success with the three schools racking up a total of 82,692 minutes read. These students were honored at CMS Night with the Eagles on April 20 th in the Charlotte Eagles' opening night 4-1 win against Crystal Palace Baltimore. CMS employees were also given free admission courtesy of F.R. Owen & Associates, who sponsored the program.

The program's early success in its launching may have been a surprise to some, but not to Nathan Krum of the Charlotte Eagles. "We knew when we launched this program that there were a great number of outstanding young individuals in CMS with the potential to make an impact when met with a challenge," stated Krum. "The only problem was we could not force them to make that decision. It was a decision that was theirs to make, and these students responded in very big way. Their ability to excel in this program is a testament to the kind of students that are in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system."

Due to its success, CMS and the Charlotte Eagles are proud to announce they will be extending the program to 12 schools next fall. The 12 schools will include Grier Academy, Sterling Elementary, and Allenbrook Elementary. In addition to those three, nine new schools will be chosen by CMS and the Eagles.
