Coggins Scores 2, Assists 2 in 4-1 Win at Bermuda
Eagles Home Open Cup Match - Tuesday, June 12 - 7:30pm at UNC-Charlotte

The Charlotte EagĀles faced USL-2 first year team the Bermuda Hogges tonight at the Bermuda National Stadium.   Jacob Coggins continued racking up the points with two goals and two assists to lead Charlotte in a 4-1 victory over the Hogges. Dustin Swinehart and Ross Spencer finished up the scoring for Charlotte, and Kwame Steede scored the lone goal for Bermuda

Dustin Swinehart had the first scoring chance at about five minutes into play.  Jacob Coggins served the ball across from the left side for Swinehart.  Swinehart took a shot off the volley, but sent it sailing over the crossbar.

Steve Shak got a chance about five minutes later off a corner kick from Alex Woods.   Shak made a strong header down and on goal, but Bermuda goalkeeper Timmy Figureido made a nice diving save to deny the goal.

Bermuda got a quality chance on goal in the 14th minute.  Laushon Dill served a ball across from the right side, finding Jared Peniston in the middle.  Peniston's shot sailed over the crossbar.

Charlotte 's Jacob Coggins forced Figureido to make a quality save in the 32nd minute.  Coggins got his head on a corner kick from Woods.  Coggins' header looked to be slipping just under the crossbar, but Figureido got a hand on it to touch it up onto the crossbar.

Bermuda had the next quality chance minutes later.  Lloyd Holder set up the opportunity with a beautiful header, flicking the ball back onto the run of Steve Astwood.  Astwood tried to put the shot over Dan Benton with a looper, but it carried just over the crossbar.

The first goal of the match finally came in the 45th minute.  Dustin Swinehart passed a ball up the middle onto the run of Jacob Coggins.  Coggins muscled his way through a defender for a break away.  Jacob beat goalkeeper Figureido with a hard low shot, skirting under the save attempt.   It was Coggins' 10th goal of the season.

Jacob Coggins scored his second goal of the match in the 59th minute of play.   Danny Harvey made a great pass onto the run of Coggins to set up the goal.  Coggins scored with a low shot inside the right post to take the 2-0 lead.

Ralph Bean created a nice scoring chance for the Hogges in the 63rd minute when he pushed through the Charlotte defense at the top of the 18 yard box, but the ball got a touch too far ahead.   Charlotte goalkeeper Dan Benton got off his line to collect the ball before Bean could get a shot off.

The Bermuda Hogges put a stop to Benton's hope of a shutout in the 79th minute.  Jared Penniston with the ball at the top of the Eagles 18 yard box cut the ball back inside and slid it to Kwame Steede.  Steede maneuvered at the top of the six and scored with a low shot inside the left post.   The goal was Bermuda's second goal of their inaugural season.

Just seconds before the final minute the Eagles added one last goal.  Adam Ruud pushed down the right side into the Bermuda half.   Ruud passed to Coggins in the middle at the top of the 18 yard box.  Coggins continued switching the attack to the left side with a pass to Ross Spencer.  Spencer fired a blistering shot from 15 yards out, finding the net inside the left post the 4-1 victory.

Dustin Swinehart put the Eagles up 3-0 in the 74th minute.  The goal came off the throw-in to Jacob Coggins from the left side.  Coggins flicked the ball on toward the right post where Dustin pushed it into the lower right corner.

Charlotte out-shot Bermuda 12-9 in the match.  Bermuda goalkeeper Timmy Figureido had a stellar performance, earning six saves on the night.  Charlotte goalkeeper Dan Benton had a strong night as well, earning four saves and just one goal against.

The Charlotte Eagles continue on the road this weekend in Baltimore when the Eagles will face Crystal Palace Baltimore.   Charlotte opened their season hosting Crystal Palace back in May and came away with a 4-1 victory.

Charlotte 's next home game is a US Open Cup Round 1 match against Lynch's Irish Pub FC (USASA) on June 12th at UNC-Charlotte's TransAmerica Field.  Tickets can be purchased at the Charlotte Eagles website at a $2 discount when purchased in advance.   The winner of the match will advance to the second round of the tournament to face the winner of the Atlanta Silverbacks (USL-1) and Azurri match.
