Eagles Struggle to Find the Target in 1-0 Loss to Harrisburg

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles hosted the Harrisburg City Islanders tonight at Waddell Stadium.   Despite Charlotte's dominance on the field it was Harrisburg that scored the lone goal of the match in Harrisburg's 1-0 victory over the Eagles.  Harrisburg's Mo Odour scored to put Harrisburg on top.

Harrisburg scored in the 42nd minute of play to take their 1-0 lead into halftime.  Mo Oduor scored the goal for Harrisburg receiving a long ball from midfield.  Odour controlled it well with his first touch, pushing it ahead and into the top right side of the Charlotte 18 yard box.   Odour beat the Charlotte defense on the sprint and beat Eagles' goalkeeper Dan Benton with a hard, placed shot inside the left post.

The Charlotte Eagles put the pressure on in the second half looking for the equalizer, but Charlotte just couldn't pull things together in the final third of the field to get that elusive goal.

Charlotte had two key chances that could have made the difference tonight if finished.  In the 57th minute, Joseph Kabwe weaved his way through Harrisburg defenders to break free at the top of the 18 yard box.   He fired a shot off, but sent it soaring over the crossbar.  In the final minute of play midfielder Adam Ruud ran onto a volley at the top of the Harrisburg 18 yard box and blasted a low shot which pinged off the left post.

The match ended with a win for Harrisburg, 1-0 over Charlotte.  Despite what the scoreboard read, Charlotte out-shot Harrisburg 11-3 in the match.

"Lots of chances, but the last couple of games we haven't been putting enough shots on frame.   It's something that has to change pretty quickly for us to be successful," commented Eagles head coach Mark Steffens on the Eagles finishing struggles tonight.

Christy Rife Leads Lady Eagles to Victory with Two Goals

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the Cocoa Expos tonight at Waddell Stadium.   Lady Eagles veteran forward Christy Rife led the Lady Eagles, scoring both Charlotte goals in the 2-1 victory.

Christy Rife put the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard in the 14th minute.   Cory Alexander took a throw in on the left side and got the ball back.  She served the ball into the middle, finding Christy Rife inside the six yard box.  Rife scored with a header, redirecting the ball into the net past Expos goalkeeper Katherine Ryan.

Rife scored her second goal of the match to put the Lady Eagles up 2-0 in the 44th minute.  Darcel Mollon set up the goal, pushing down the left side.  Mollon cut inside and served the ball into the middle.  Christy Rife controlled the ball with her chest and scored with a left foot shot beating Ryan inside the left post.

The Cocoa Expos answered just seconds later, scoring off a corner kick.  Jazz Johnson took the corner kick for the Expos from the left side.  She served it across to Denise Brolley, who headed the ball into the goal just under the crossbar.

Charlotte and Cocoa were both scoreless in the second half.  Charlotte out-shot the Cocoa Expos 6-5 in the half.

Lady Eagles head coach Lee Horton commented on the match, "Christy Rife pops back into the starting lineup and gets two great goals.   The chest trap on the second goal was just phenomenal. Our key is the balance of our team; our bench coming in, having high energy and getting the job done."

The Lady Eagles are on the road for their next match, when they face the Hampton Roads Piranhas on Saturday, July 14 th.  The Lady Eagles return to home field action on Tuesday, July 17th at 7:00pm when they host the Richmond Kickers Destiny.
